Nearly 20 years ago, Michael Janich revolutionized personal-defense knife design by introducing the tactical Wharncliffe blade through his collaboration with Spyderco. At a time when curved blades like tantos and spear points dominated the market, Janich used real-world testing—most notably his "Pork Man" demonstrations—to prove that straight-edged Wharncliffe blades offered superior cutting and thrusting performance. His findings led to the creation of the fixed-blade Ronin, and later the folding Yojimbo, both designed with self-defense in mind. After briefly parting ways with Spyderco, Janich returned to develop the improved Yojimbo 2 in 2011, which remains a staple in Spyderco’s lineup. A fixed-blade version, the Ronin 2, followed shortly after. Today’s popularity of Wharncliffe tactical knives can be traced directly to Janich’s innovations and Spyderco’s support for forward-thinking design.
